Automatic Writing

Write. Don’t think.

Instructions for automatic writing – please see the title above.

Haha….kidding….

Automatic writing – what is it?

Automatic writing might mean something slightly different for everyone, but for me it’s a way to receive information or a message from a source higher than my human self. Through automatic writing, I can create a powerful connection between myself and a loved one who has passed, one of my spirit guides, Spirit, an angel, or my higher self.

Automatic writing – what is its purpose?

This is really open to each person to decide, however some possible purposes include:

  • to receive comfort and support in times of emotional upset;
  • to receive advice or suggestions about a decision and/or in response to a specific question;
  • to connect with a loved one who has passed;
  • to connect with your spirit guide/s;
  • to confirm that an angel is watching over you, guiding and protecting you.

I personally prefer to use automatic writing when I am feeling overwhelmed by a decision or emotions, or when I have had a breakthrough or ‘revelation’ and I need a little help making sense of it in my mind.

Automatic writing – how is it done?

If you are wanting to receive guidance or advice regarding a particular situation/topic/question, you can write it down first or just bring it to mind and repeat it several times to yourself.

If you are wanting to connect with someone in particular, bring an image of them to mind (or focus on an actual image of them) and repeat their name several times to yourself.

Since automatic writing involves a connection with something or someone beyond our physical human world, we need to begin in a meditative state. It doesn’t matter how you get yourself into a meditative state – deep breathing, relaxing music, chanting, guided visualisation – whatever works for you; as long as you can free your mind of focused thoughts, you’re off to a good start.

Then you just start writing! Don’t think about what you are writing or if it makes sense, simply write down words as they pop into your head.

If the words aren’t flowing to start with, you may like to start with doodling – swirls, shapes, whatever – or writing the letters of the alphabet; sometimes a swirl will suddenly become a letter and a word will follow (and then another and another and…). Sometimes while writing the letters of the alphabet, a letter will become the first letter of a word, and then another word will follow, and another….

Automatic writing – what if nothing happens?

If nothing happens (word-wise), despite your best efforts to clear your mind and relax into a totally zen state, don’t despair. Not now doesn’t mean not ever! Think of it as a busy signal when you try to call someone and they’re otherwise occupied, and try again later.

I have some automatic writing attempts in my journal that are just scribbles and gibberish – I had tried dialing the number, but no one answered! Wrong number or wrong time – doesn’t matter, you can always try again.

So, open up your journal, find your special pretty journal pen (surely I’m not the only person who has one??), and be prepared to be amazed by the words your hand writes when you’re not thinking about them!
