Energy vampires: how to recognise them and protect your energy field from them

Almost immediately after tuning into her aura, I could see and feel the effect that her co-worker was having on Miranda’s* physical wellbeing – the classic ‘calling cards’ of an energy vampire. I see them often in my clients, during both Intuitive Medicine consultations and oracle card readings.

Before I go much further, let’s get clear on what I’m referring to by the term ‘energy vampire’.

An energy vampire ‘feeds’ off the energy of others, either intentionally or subconsciously, for their own benefit, to make them feel better about themselves and within themselves.

They don’t sparkle in the sun, suck blood from your neck, get around in silk capes, or sleep in a coffin, and they can’t turn into a bat. In fact, they’re usually not at all scary or intimidating –  not your typical evil villain types.

If an energy vampire happens to make your acquaintance, you will likely notice straightaway that there is something about them that you just don’t like and you just don’t feel comfortable around them, but you may not be able to put your finger on what it is about them that makes you feel a bit ‘off’.

This is your intuition alerting you to protect your energy! However, you are probably someone who likes to give people a fair go, the benefit of the doubt; you always try to see the good in people. I know this to be true about you, because this is the kind of person whose energy is oh-so-attractive to an energy vampire. In an unfortunate paradox, it will be quite easy to be your delightfully kind and open self with an energy vampire, because they tend to present themselves as very personable, friendly, confident, interesting people.

By building your trust in them through carefully timed conversations and appearing to show interest in your thoughts, opinions, and experiences, the energy vampire manages to keep your energy exactly as they want it – nice and open and unrestricted…theirs for the taking basically.

The most obvious sign that you’ve been hit by, you’ve struck by (sorry, had to do it!)…an energy vampire, is feeling (no surprise here really) energetically drained after spending time around them, even if you haven’t interacted directly with them. You may even feel this without having physically been around them, eg. after a phone call.

You may also experience other physical symptoms, such as a headache, stomach pain or upset stomach, other aches and pains, brain fog, and fatigue.

There are also emotional and mental symptoms you may experience which could alert you to the presence of an energy vampire: low mood, irritability, lack of motivation, apathy, anxiety, fearfulness, sadness, uncertainty, indecision, and you may even feel as though you are going crazy.

Now, obviously, there are many medical conditions that can cause these symptoms, so please do not hesitate to check in with your trusted health professional to rule out anything nasty going on, if you are concerned about your mental or physical health.

OK, so hopefully I haven’t completely freaked you out, and filled your head with images of nasty energy vampires lurking around every corner, waiting to suck on your…energy field.

The thing is, we don’t need to fear these folks – that would only be a needless waste of your precious, dwindling energy reserves. Instead, you simply need to learn how to protect your energy and get a bit (i.e. a lot) more selfish with it. It is after all your energy!

The easiest and most effective way to protect yourself from an energy vampire is to put as much physical and emotional distance between you and them as is possible – in my experience, out of sight, out of mind works pretty well with these folks.

If, however, the vamp in question is someone you cannot avoid completely, like a family member or a coworker, then the easiest and most effective way to protect your precious energy is to ‘bubble’ yourself.

You need to learn to protect your energy with a bubble of light. To start with, I suggest calling in Archangel Michael to help you, until it becomes second nature for you.

Perform the following visualisation to protect yourself with your bubble, before you leave your home:

  • While sitting, standing or lying down (you’ll be able to do it ‘on the fly’ eventually) close your eyes and take a few deep breaths;
  • Turn your attention inwards;
  • Visualise a bright white light coming down through the crown of your head and feeling your entire body;
  • Now visualise the white light expanding out from your body until it forms a complete bubble of light around you – check that your entire body is within the closed bubble;
  • Visualise a small hole in your bubble, just above your head, and through this hole a soft pink mist of joy, a light green mist of unconditional love, and a fluffy white mist of healing, fill the inside of your bubble. Your bubble will stay filled with these mists for as long as it remains around you.
  • Now, within your mist-filled bubble, you will notice that you can still interact with the outside world in much the same way you always have; however, you will also notice that now any negative energy or ill intentions will bounce off the outside of your bubble, while you remain safe and unaffected by any (conscious or unconscious) attempts from others to feed off your energy or to influence your energy in some way. Ask Archangel Michael, or your spirit guide, to test your bubble, so you can see that any negativity bounces off the outside of it.
  • You can go about your day knowing that your energy and your entire being are safe and sound. You will not be completely detached from others, and you will still feel and share with others, but only those you choose to do so with – eg. you will still feel love for and from your children, and they will still be able to experience your love and your wonderful squishy, mushy cuddles!

Make a conscious effort to ‘bubble’ yourself before spending time in the vicinity of anyone you identify as a possible energy vampire, and I also like to be very conscious about my bubble before heading out to public places, like shopping centres, where I really don’t want to be picking up strangers’ energy.

Parents, once you have your bubble around you can expand it out further to include your children, if they are unable to protect themselves with their own bubble. I used to do this every morning on the drive to school for my kids. Just be sure to visualise your kids breaking off from your bubble in their own individual bubbles, and then bring your bubble back in to once again include just you. This is especially helpful for kids who are very sensitive and empathic – even a short trip to the supermarket in amongst a huge mix of energies can be hard work for these lil’ poppets!

Just to be very clear – your bubble is only intended to protect your energy. It will not protect your physical body from a moving car or falling from a great height, nor is it like an invisibility cloak – if you try to rob a bank while bubbled, you will be seen and probably shot at (and, no, your bubble of light will not protect you from bullets).

Once you start protecting yourself with your bubble, especially if you are very intentional about protecting your energy from a specific energy vampire, you may notice changes in the way they approach and interact with you.

They likely won’t be consciously aware of it, but they will know on some level that they are no longer able to feed off your energy in the same way they have been, and their reaction can be almost comical to witness. You may notice their attitude towards you completely changes, almost as though you suddenly smell revolting to them! Maybe that’s where the garlic necklace to protect against blood-sucking vampires comes from!

After her initial consultation with me, Miranda* diligently bubbled herself before heading off to work each day, and consciously protected herself from her co-worker’s energy vampiring (yes, I am quite sure that’s a word).

When I saw her at her follow-up consultation a few weeks later, Miranda* looked lighter and brighter. She said that she felt she had so much more energy, and was feeling so much more positive and in control of her life. Miranda giggled a little as she told me how she noticed immediately how differently her co-worker was interacting with her once Miranda started going to work all bubbled up, and it was lovely to see her obvious joy around being able to control her energy field. We tend to forget that we are in charge of our own energy, don’t we?

With practice, you will find that bubbling yourself happens without you consciously visualising it, although you may find the odd sneaky vamp gets past your bubble during a moment of ‘actually they seem OK, maybe I was wrong about them’ (we are only human after all!); however, after expelling their energy from your bubble, you can simply reinforce your bubble’s boundary and go back to being blissfully unaffected by their attempts to drain you – no garlic needed!
