What Is Holistic Health, Really?
Along my healing journey, I discovered the incredible power of looking at health as a whole—mind, body, emotions, and spirit. This inspired me to create the Comprehensive Holistic Health Assessment, a 90-minute session designed to deeply understand your unique story and help you take the next steps toward lasting wellness.
Holistic health goes far beyond buzzwords and wellness trends. It approaches health by seeing you as a whole person — not just a list of symptoms, but a living, breathing story. It recognises how physical pain can weave itself through emotional stress, how fatigue often runs deeper than just poor sleep, and how real healing rarely comes from a single pill or test result.
Holistic health means honouring the body’s messages, reconnecting with intuition, and creating space for real, lasting change.
How I ‘Holistified’ My Own Health
I know what it’s like to be handed a label and told to manage it. When I was living with fibromyalgia, I felt invisible in the system. It wasn’t until I took a different path, and put myself in charge of my recovery, that I began to heal.
I was barely 30 when I heard the most infuriating, disheartening phrase a medical professional had ever said to me. The rheumatologist had just diagnosed me with fibromyalgia — a debilitating, chronic pain condition. My well-planned future was essentially written off with nine words:
“You’ll just have to learn to live with it.”
Delivered matter-of-factly by a well-respected specialist I’d hoped would fix me.
“What if I change my diet? Or can you recommend a movement program, like yoga? I’d prefer not to take medication if I can help it.” I was reaching for a shred of hope, some kind of pain management that didn’t make me feel worse.
“I can write you a prescription for an anti-anxiety or antidepressant. Or… you’ll just have to learn to live with it.” That was all he had to offer.
“I know what it’s like to be handed a label and told to manage it. When I was living with fibromyalgia, I felt invisible in the system. It wasn’t until I took a different path that I began to heal.”
I left that appointment discouraged and resigned. I deferred my first semester of nursing and tried to accept a life of all-over muscle pain, fatigue, and countless symptoms that made being a mum — and a person — incredibly hard.
But then came the moment everything changed.
My Attitude Change Day
I remember the day my attitude changed, and I now call it my Attitude Change day – my AC day. It was the day my life changed, because my attitude changed.
Melanie O’Shea, ‘FibromyAWESOME‘
At my lowest, I considered giving my ex-husband full custody of our children because I truly believed I couldn’t be the mum they needed me to be. And that thought — giving up the one thing I’d wanted my whole life — was a line I couldn’t cross.
Something inside me clicked: No. Absolutely not. I’m not okay with this.
If the medical profession couldn’t help me, then I’d help myself. I threw myself into research: scientific articles, personal stories, treatment options, holistic practices. I figured I had nothing to lose by trying.
Over the next couple of years, I radically changed how I lived. I cleaned up my diet. I moved my body gently and gradually built strength. I prioritised sleep, cut out what drained me, reduced my stress, and worked on healing trauma.
I became the CEO of My Health, calling in ‘contractors’ when I needed them — a dietitian, a psychologist — but otherwise learning to trust my own body and inner wisdom.
Today, I’ve been free of fibromyalgia symptoms for almost a decade.
I essentially cured the incurable.
I did it by myself, for myself — and I’m living proof that another way is possible.
I even wrote and self-published a book about my journey, FibromyAWESOME. I now give it away freely, because the real gift isn’t the book — it’s hope. And if my story can offer someone that hope, then it was all worth it.
The Problem With the Conventional Approach
Looking back, I don’t think that rheumatologist was trying to be cruel. He was trained to treat illness, not people. Maybe he genuinely cared about helping people. In the system he worked in, he did what he knew — prescribe, label, move on.
That’s the problem. Most of us are used to 10-minute appointments and quick fixes. But deep healing rarely happens that way.
The conventional model of healthcare often focuses on managing symptoms, not understanding root causes. Appointments are rushed. Treatment is reactive. And the deeper questions — the ones that really matter — rarely get asked. Questions like:
What’s your body trying to tell you? What’s going on beneath the surface? What do you actually need to heal?
For so many people, this leaves them feeling unheard, dismissed, or like their experience doesn’t quite fit the textbook. I’ve been there. And I know what it’s like to feel like your body is betraying you, while the system shrugs its shoulders.
“Most of us are used to 10-minute appointments and quick fixes. But deep healing rarely happens that way.”
I also know this: you are not broken. You’re not “too complex” or “too sensitive” or “too much”. I see you as a whole person — because that’s how true healing begins.
My Holistic Philosophy
True healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s not just about managing symptoms or ticking boxes on a checklist. It’s about understanding the whole person — body, mind, emotions, energy, and spirit — and the unique story that connects it all.
Your body isn’t just a collection of symptoms or ‘problems’ — it’s a story. And when we learn to listen deeply, we begin to understand what it’s really telling us. When I work with someone, I’m not just asking about their physical symptoms. I’m listening for the patterns, the deeper messages, the subtle clues the body is offering. I explore everything from sleep and nutrition to emotional wellbeing, energy flow, and even your work environment — the often-overlooked pieces that actually hold the key to your healing.
“Your body isn’t just a collection of symptoms — it’s a story. And when we learn to listen deeply, we begin to understand what it’s really asking for.”
I also bring intuition into the process — not in a vague or fluffy way, but as a powerful tool for insight and connection. After all, your body holds wisdom. It speaks in sensations, symptoms, and sometimes even silence. When we slow down and learn to listen, healing becomes so much more than a one-size-fits-all protocol — it becomes a personal, soul-level conversation.
Because here’s the truth: you are not separate parts. You are a whole being. And your healing needs to honour that.
Introducing the Comprehensive Holistic Health Assessment
This is the kind of deep, thorough, whole-person care I desperately needed when I was at my lowest — the kind that takes its time, listens deeply, and honours what’s real.
The Comprehensive Holistic Health Assessment is a 90-minute session where we explore everything that matters to your health and healing. Together, we look at your symptoms, lifestyle, stress levels, work, emotional wellbeing, energy flow, nutrition, sleep patterns, and more — not to overwhelm, but to finally connect the dots.
It’s for you if you’re feeling lost, stuck, or dismissed in the conventional system. It’s for you if you’re craving clarity, direction, and a plan that actually honours your body and your lived experience. It’s for you if you’ve tried “everything” but haven’t yet felt seen.
“This session is about being fully seen — not just as a patient, but as a person. It’s where healing begins.”
Some people use this session as a powerful stand-alone reset. Others choose to use it as a foundation for ongoing support as a Holistic Health Coaching client. This session creates space for you to feel fully heard, seen, and supported.
This is where deep healing begins — not with a label or a prescription, but with understanding.
Where Deep Healing Begins
This session is about being fully seen — not just as a patient, but as a person. It’s where healing begins. It isn’t just about ticking boxes on a form or a generic once-over. It’s a powerful turning point.

Here’s what people often say after a Comprehensive Holistic Health Assessment:
- “I finally feel like someone actually listened to me.”
- “I understand my body in a way I never have before.”
- “This gave me hope again.”
- “Everything suddenly makes sense.”
- “I feel empowered to take control of my health.”
- “I didn’t expect to feel so seen… it was like exhaling after years of holding my breath.”
Because when someone really hears you and honours your full story, something inside begins to shift. When we feel seen and supported, we start to heal in ways that are lasting and real. You remember that healing is possible — and that you get to define it on your terms.
“When we feel seen and supported, we start to heal in ways that are lasting and real.”
