This is the second article in a series of blog posts exploring the 7 chakras and each chakra’s role in your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. This week I will be discussing how the health of your Sacral Chakra affects and influences your health and well-being.
The chakras are energy centres situated in specific areas of the body, and each chakra plays a particular role in your overall health and well-being. To find out more about what the 7 chakras are and why they matter, you might like to read this article of mine and this one.
If you missed my post all about Your Root Chakra and Your Health, you can find it here, and you can also watch my Root Chakra oracle card reading, with healing messages from Spirit here.
Where is your Sacral Chakra?
Your Sacral Chakra is located in the centre of your lower abdomen. It extends to the lower back and through abdominal organs such as the intestines, appendix, kidneys, and the uterus, ovaries and bladder.
Why is your Sacral Chakra important?
When your Sacral Chakra is healthy and balanced it will be a lovely deep orange shade. The health of your Sacral Chakra has a huge effect on your overall sense of wellness. It is the chakra, or energy centre, for emotions, feelings, creativity, sexuality and sensuality. We’re talking big, deep stuff here, right?! And super important aspects of your health and well-being.
The state of a client’s Sacral Chakra tells me a great deal about their overall health picture. What appears to be a purely physical problem almost always has an emotional or self-expression aspect to it. In fact, the powerful role of our emotions in our health never ceases to amaze me!
Us humans are not typically great at giving our emotions and feelings the attention they require! We tend to wait until we have physical pain or discomfort before we look for healing solutions. Even then, it is highly unlikely we’ll make the connection between our physical health and our neglected emotions or feelings.
Clients who have experienced trauma, and/or have ignored and suppressed their emotions for some time, tend to have unhealthy Sacral Chakras. I will also see unbalanced, unhappy Sacral Chakras in clients who are in jobs or relationships where they cannot express their full range of feelings.
We ignore and suppress our emotions and feelings at our own detriment – at some point, not expressing our full selves becomes a physical issue!
How can you know if your Sacral Chakra is healthy or not?
The simplest way to know if your Sacral Chakra is balanced and healthy is to check in with it in your mind’s eye.
I described how to do this for your Root Chakra here – the process is the same for each of the 7 chakras.
There are also signs and symptoms that can help you to know if your Sacral Chakra is thriving or not:
Healthy & balanced | In need of attention |
Lucid, comforting dreams Libido is typical for you Minimal/no PMS symptoms Regular, painless periods Regular, painless bowel movements Enjoy social situations Comfortable expressing emotions Good posture, flexibility | Bloating, sluggish digestion, flatulence Changes in menstrual cycle Need for more solitude Constipation or diarrhoea or alternating Changes in appetite (especially reduced) Feeling frustrated, ‘stuck’, irritable Driven by guilt and obligation or resentment Lower back pain and stiffness |
What can you do to keep your Sacral Chakra healthy and balanced?
The best way to keep your Sacral Chakra healthy and balanced is to acknowledge and pay attention to your emotions and feelings. It is also important honour the expression of your emotions and feelings, as well your creativity, your sensuality and sexuality.
Avoid judging or labelling your emotions and feelings as negative or positive, good or bad – this is such a pointless exercise. Instead, focus your energy on feeling whatever needs to be felt. Controlling which parts of you are allowed to be expressed will only limit your understanding of yourself. This is a recipe for mind-body disconnect!
When creativity, emotions, feelings, even sexuality have been suppressed or controlled again and again, you end up creating something inside of yourself which is scary to be open to. You build wall upon wall to ‘protect’ yourself from what eventually feels like a huge can of worms that will potentially destroy you.
In case it isn’t already clear: control and suppression are not at all beneficial to your Sacral Chakra health, or your overall health.
What is beneficial to your Sacral Chakra:
- Journalling, automatic writing
- Speaking with a counsellor or psychologist
- Safely exploring your sexuality and sexual preferences, including masturbation, self-pleasure
- Opening up to a loved one over a hot cuppa
- Creative pursuits – art, craft, writing, flower arranging, sewing, woodwork, etc
- Conversations with your inner child or yourself at different ages
- Listening to music that fits with your mood
- Nourishing, protein-rich food
- Periods of solitude
